Android App of the Week: WaveSecure Beta by tenCube

WaveSecure Beta IconThis program is a must-have if you store vital personal or company data on your phone, and let's face it, we all have at least one bit of pretty valuable information on our smartphones. And you have further incentive to get moving on this one, because a free lifetime subscription is available for all new users for a limited time only.

WaveSecure Beta might not be in a production version yet, but it sure feels like a polished app to me. Perhaps tenCube is taking after Google's "BETA" philsophy, that is keeping a program in beta testing phase for a ridiculously long amount of time a-la G-mail and other services they provide.

So what does this sweet little program do? Well, the answer is a number of things. First, it lets you remotely lock down your phone from anywhere, as long as you have a browser and internet connection. This is quite handy in case the phone is lost, stolen, or simply misplaced. The lock down will prevent any wandering eyes from accessing the data stored on the device.

But what if the phone is in the hands of a hacker that is trying to steal corporate secrets? Never fear here, for if you act quickly enough, you can also initiate a remote wipe of all of the device's contents. Yup, it's like an software-based EMP device, except it doesn't even ruin the phone!

Not only that, but WaveSecure allows you to back up SMS data (text messages), call logs, and even your phone's pictures so it's easy to restore or transfer them to a new device, if the need ever arises. And it isn't a closed shop to just phones. You can access your backed up data from virtually anywhere with an Internet connection.

Probably the best feature of the service in case your phone gets lost or stolen is the ability to remotely activate a-GPS tracking for the benefit of you and the local authorities. I really am not too worried if my cellphone (or the backpack that usually carries it) gets stolen because I can track them down pretty quickly.

I know this article sounds like a sales-pitch, but I promise I am not receiving any sort of compensation for this review, other than the pretty cool service I am enjoying through them right now. The software has even won an all-around award from the second annual Google Developer Challenge. Really top-notch software and services, so check them out and download the app at www.wavesecure.com
